
Chemistry is a very difficult thing to isolate, and whatever vagaries must have been sometimes very painful for Jackie, JFK really adored her, and was proud of her, and I had the feeling in ‘63 that they were extremely close and affectionate, after the death of the baby. Kennedy called me to say that Jackie hadn’t heard anything from Adlai Stevenson, of whom she remained very fond. Kennedy asked me whether or not I might do something to encourage him to write. He had that kind of consideration about her.
